I went into this series expecting a crash and burn, but was happily surprised when it turned out to be a pretty decent viewing experience. I bombed my way through the series in only a few days (Netflix was only showing it streaming for a few days), but I didn’t find myself bored or wishing I could watch over a longer period of time.

Costumes are good. Acting is good. Storyline was close to what I remember from the book, though obviously some stuff had to be modified for the film adaptation.

2nd Sunshine Cleaning

Drama

A quality date movie for grownups, Sunshine Cleaning shares more than just an ironically radiant title with 2006’s Little Miss Sunshine. Both are about overcoming failed dreams, not to mention both feature Alan Arkin as a kooky grandfather. While this year’s model doesn’t reach the inspired transcendence of 06’s Oscar winner, it is nonetheless an enjoyable and thoughtful entertainment.

Mystery

Deserving of its wide acclaim, Memento nonetheless remains a bit of an aficionados’ treat. The central conceit of the story – the ‘condition’ that restricts Guy Pierce’s Leonard from forming new memories – drags on the dialogue and doesn’t allow the story to gain momentum. Still this movie is essential viewing for mystery and serious film fans.

Amusing trifle, as notable for its fabulous settings as for its easy charm and light comedy. Audrey Tautou’s gold digger ends up tutoring then falling for an unlikely partner in crime. Unfortunately, the movie never catches fire, though it does deliver several funny moments.
