1st The Strangers
2008 Very Good 31 Points

The Strangers has brought scary back! Scary like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, scary like the original The Haunting, scary like Amy Winehouse! The beauty of this movie is it's simplicity. Straightforward: two people are terrorized and tortured by three clearly insane people. No gratuitous gore and bloodshed, though it's not squeaky clean either. The viewer is more commonly frightened by what they hear rather than what they see, which to me is what it's all about. This one FREAKED ME OUT.

1st The Dark Knight
2008 Perfect 173 Points

An absolutely incredible film! This is what Batman movies always should have been and always should be. The Dark Knight is a perfect sequel to the already fantastic Batman Begins.

1st 30 Days of Night
2007 Very Good 24 Points

These aren't your Anne-Rice-ambiguously-sexy vampires, these suckers will hunt you down with pure ferocious animal instinct and forget to wipe their mouths after they suck you dry. These vampires were very interesting, I wanted to see more of them and less of the humans I was supposed to be caring about. Speaking of the humans…Okay, I don't need to know what happened every single minute of all thirty days or anything, but we see something like day 2, 5, 8, and then we're suddenly at day 27 and I'm just wondering what the survivors did between day 8 and 27? Did they play the longest, m…

1st The Cat's Meow
2001 Great 2 Points

The glamour of the 1920's and a mysterious death in one fabulous film! This is said to be the truest account of what happened on a yacht belonging to William Randolph Hearst (before the depression ruined him and granddaughter Patty went nuts). It makes me yearn for the carefree days of silent Hollywood and prohibition. We like to think things were more fun back then, but this film reminds us that SNAFU's abound no matter what decade you're in.

1st Sweeney Todd: Th...
2007 Really Great 118 Points

Nobody could have made this film but Tim Burton. This is his niche, this is his film. I knew nothing about the broadway musical/other Sweeny films before seeing this movie, but if there's any production better than this one I don't want to know about it.

1st In Bruges
2008 Good 98 Points

Not as wacky as the previews would have you believe, but In Bruges is definitely worth seeing. In this black comedy hitmen Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) are sent to hide out in Bruges, Belgium by their boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes) after a botched job in London. Ken is happy to sight-see and stay in their room at night to await a call from Harry, but the brooding yet fun loving Ray looks for a good time in the pub, on a movie set where they're filming midgets, and with a blonde by the name of Chloe (Clémence Poésy). Conflicts ensue usually with a violent, yet funny outcome…

1st Anna and the Kin...
1946 Very Good 2 Points

The first film made about the story of Anna Leonowens, the english school teacher who went to Siam to teach the king's 67 children. Anna (Irene Dunne) is a strong willed woman who often butts heads with the King (Rex Harrison), but eventually becomes an important friend to his royal highness. Together they begin to mold Siam into the modern country it must become if it is to stay an independant empire. If you've seen or are a fan of the Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical, The King and I, which was based upon this story, I highly reccomend you have a look at Anna and the King of Siam.

1st Better Off Dead...
1985 Great 2 Points

Hey, I don't really like John Cusack either, but since he's always trying to off himself in this movie, I don't mind him as much. Better Off Dead is actually one of my favorite 80's movies. It's full of 80's teen movie charm, but in that random, whacky way that demands multiple viewings (not like with Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club… I mean, seriously, how much does anyone need to listen to Molly Ringwald whine about her life? The answer is never). Besides zat, zere eez an adorable French exchange student played by ze lovely Diane Franklin, who ultimately saves John Cusack from…
