1st The Way Back
2011 Good 29 Points

A dramatic survival story amidst panoramic and equally dramatic scenery. The Way Back tells a tale of several men who escape the brutality of a Siberian gulag in the early 40’s to trudge their way through vast expanses of differing landscapes: a fierce Siberian winter, forests, tundra, desert, Himilayas, Great Wall of China – you get the idea. The movie drags on a little bit too long – but it certainly gives you an appreciation for the distance travelled! Also briefly infused was a bit of information on the politics of the era that brought so many varieties of “state enemies” wh…

3rd Senna
2010 Perfect 83 Points

You needn't be a racing fan to appreciate this cinéma vérité biography of superstar Formula One champion Ayrton Senna. An appreciation for bravura cinema, natural genius or Eurostyle glamour are other appetites the movie satisfies.

Senna draws from copious footage of the handsome young racer's life and career – his teen stardom in Brazil, his astonishing splash on the world stage of Formula One, his controversial run of dominance atop that über glamorous sport and his tragically unnecessary death at age 34.

Boiled into a tight hour and a half, the movie has the narrative pace of sc…

4th Hoosiers
1986 Great 69 Points

Second chances define Hoosiers as much as basketball, even though the movie is widely considered the greatest hoops movie ever. Hell, some have declared it the greatest sports movie ever.

Thus non-sports fans needn't shy away, as basketball is a backdrop to a terrific story about a middle-age man's professional redemption and last shot at personal happiness. Gene Hackman is ideal for such a wistfully adult role. Barbara Hershey and Dennis Hopper join him in highlight roles of their stellar careers.

The movie uses Indiana basketball as a lens into 1950s Middle America, making *Hoo…

5th George Harrison:...
2011 Really Great 66 Points

Essential Beatles viewing. Say no more. Say no more.

Well … here's more.

  • A Martin Scorsese Picture, which says right there you gotta watch it. I mean Martin F'ing Scorsese making a picture about George Harrison is a fusion of two pop culture demigods.
  • It's a treasure trove of Beatles home movies and interviews with personal intimates. These unspool like recovered memories from the Baby Boomer Generation, proving that Beatlemania still grips those of us who remember them in their prime.
  • Untold stories get told, from how George came to write Here Comes the Sun to how he…

6th WWII in HD
2009 Really Great 17 Points

It is unbelievable that so much quality color footage of WWII was found by the producers of 'WWII in HD'. The outcome is fantastically revealing footage of life in and out of the combat zone. And be warned: just because it is old footage doesn't mean it is mild. Instead, you are sometimes exposed to dramatically graphic footage of war's worst effects: death, destruction, and carnage. From mass slaughter of US and Japanese marines in the Pacific to mass slaughter of innocents in German death-camps, you get the picture: War is a horrible, horrible thing. As with its sequel 'Vietnam in HD',…

7th Young Adult
2011 Perfect 83 Points

Deadly funny, Young Adult expertly skewers shallow Americana, especially the self-absorbed who drift through the sports bars, Hampton Inns and chain stores that delineate it. Nearly every scene tickles. Many are provocatively LOL, especially effective on those of us with a taste for really smart black humor.

Three superior talents make the movie. Golden star Charlize Theron plays a "Prom Queen Bitch from Hell" with perfect pitch. Writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman prove that the sensibility behind "Juno":http://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/634-juno, their whip-smart …
