2nd The Hunger Games...
2013 Really Great 83 Points

The silver screen has never seen a contemporary ideal the likes of Katniss Everdeen, male or female. Jennifer Lawrence's rise to superstardom is wrapped up in her personification of this revolutionary hero, this secular Joan of Arc for our post-modern times. J.Law channels J.Arc to become K.Eve you might say.

Fortunately you don't have to grok The Hunger Games' deeper meanings or know the book to dig the movie. It helps to have seen "the first movie":http://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/3485-the-hunger-games, though that's not necessary given how well told this one is. Familiar…

3rd The Hunger Games
2012 Great 83 Points

An important but hardly perfect movie, The Hunger Games is however great enough to justify the fuss. The monster box office generated by this first installment of Suzanne Collins' bestselling trilogy of YA novels is helping The Hunger Games and heroine Katniss Eberdeen become primary cultural influences on tens of millions of real young adults. In short, The Hunger Games is the American "Harry Potter":http://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/3202.

It does suffer from phoniness in how it depicts humanity operating under grotesquely insane situations. People don't easily hunt people….

4th The Burning Plain
2008 Great 83 Points

A woman on the edge propels the oh-so-smart drama in this almost too clever movie. The story turns back in on itself time and again, not fully revealing its convergence till the end. An ultimately satisfying twist does come, though not before we're asked to hang in through lots of puzzlingly self-destructive behavior.

Three dazzling actresses play The Burning Plain's damaged women. Charlize Theron looms largest as the aforementioned woman literally on the edge of complete self-destruction, with Kim Basinger and Jennifer Lawrence in a mother-daughter parallel plot. All three are gre…

5th Winter's Bone
2010 Very Good 96 Points

Heroism and bravery have a new name, and that name is Ree. Just 17 years old, Ree's as brave and heroic as any movie hero ever. Played by stellar newcomer Jennifer Lawrence, her quest – Winter's Bone being a quest movie – is so virtuous and she's so intrepid, so true, that you know she's bound to deliver a happy ending. You just don't know how it’s going to play out.

Set in the "methamphetamine culture" of today's Ozarks, Winter's Bone follows young Ree as she seeks out her meth-cooking Daddy so she can avoid the bail bondsman from taking their house, in the process throwing her, …
