I’m open to pretty much any kind of movie, so long as it’s well done. Favorite genres include comedies, war movies, historical dramas, biopics, action and nature. Like I said, pretty much all kinds.

  • TV

I don’t watch a whole lot of series TV. My few season-tickets are smart, funny and interesting. That once meant Friday Night Lights, Justified & Entourage. Now, there’s most of a season of Boardwalk Empire on my disk and I can hardly be bothered to watch it.

  • Reviews

Reviews should be worth reading before seeing something and after. They shouldn’t spoil the plot. In most cases they shouldn’t even recount much of it. They should clearly state if or who should see the movie or show – who shouldn’t – and why.

Then they should delve deeper into the subtleties of the direction or the music or whatever. If the movie being reviewed is topical or political or historical, it’s nice for a review to provide some color or commentary on what the reality is that underlays it.

The better, the best, the perfect.

A lavish Hitchcock treat, full of glamour, suspense and wit. The establishing scene is a virtuoso display of filmmaking all by itself, while Grace Kelley graces – there is no other word for it – the silver screen like a goddess amongst mortals.

Just as Goodfellas is the ne plus ultra of mob movies, Unforgiven is the apotheosis of Westerns. In classic Western form the movie endorses the ethos of the lone righteous man doing what needs done, while at the same time baldly debunking the glorification of gunfighters in the Wild West. Top Dog Western star Clint Eastwood commands the center of the movie on screen and behind the camera, painting Unforgiven as an elegy for his career in Westerns and for the genre itself.

Gripping from start to finish, though the end is never in doubt. Stands as a testament to American heroism, ingenuity, and bravura moviemaking.

Tom Hanks – in one of his iconic performances – heads a stellar cast at the top of their games.

The screenplay introduced not one, but two catchphrases into the popular lexicon.
