In the spirit of ‘Sicko’, and from the director of ‘Supersize-Me’, Morgan Spurlock heads out on a satirical journey to find Osama. The film starts with the humor early when Mogan goes through an ‘intense’ set of survival, language, and anti-terrorism training in a tounge-in-cheek way. From there, there is a series of extremely interesting soujourns in to Egypt, Morocco, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and of course Pakistan and Afghanistan. Some of the conversations with many locals were light and humorous, but all of them very engaging, revealing and thought provoking as the pattern of how that region really thinks emerges. The movie quotes FDR as a way to highlight about how the US helpsed create its own mess overseas: “He may be a sonofabitch, but he’s our sonofabitch” (which refers to Carribean president Trujillo). In ’53, we propped up the Shah of Iran who proceeded to torture his peopple and prompt their revolt and capture of US hotages in ’79. Then Ayatollah Khomeni took over and we then befreinded Sadam Hussein who was against Iran — well, you know the rest of that story…. And this drives home the main point of the movie: we are our own worst enemy. Most of the interviewees intimate “we love the American people, but reject its foreign policy and hate its government”. The movie humanizes the middle-east, and hopefully moves us closer to peace through humorous insight. I do highly recommend this movie.
