  1. Quality
  2. Good 3.0

Not bad. A significant improvement over the first film. Unfortunately, movies like Hostel have given rise to the use of the now cliche description of “torture porn” for critics to quickly dismiss the film with. Yes, the film is brutal in areas, but it is about a torture chamber, so that is expected. Movies like this are almost always dismissed outright at first, but time can sometimes make them cult classics (I Spit on Your Grave, Cannibal Holocaust).

To say Hostel Part II will become a cult-classic is probably going too far, but so is saying the movie is nothing but torture porn. Extremely gory horror films are not a new concept, but Hostel seems to be the new target for those that hate them. This one could be improved in many ways, but it’s a step in the right direction for Roth.

  3. Good 3.0

Probably the best performances, and the biggest improvement this film has over the original, are from the two men who traveling to join Elite Hunting. Unlike the original, we actually get to see the torturers for a significant amount of time prior to the torture scenes this time around. We see what they are like in their normal lives, get some insight into why they join Elite Hunting and see some of the internal conflict that they experience throughout the process.

  8. Good 3.0
  9. Direction Good 3.0
  10. Play Good 3.0
  11. Music Good 3.0
  12. Visuals Good 3.0
  13. Content
  14. Obscene 5.0

The violence and gore is pretty gruesome, as would be expected. In comparison, the nudity and the language are almost forgettable. If you can’t handle the violence, nothing else matters.

  15. Sex Explicit 5.0
  16. Violence Monstrous 5.0
  17. Rudeness Vile 5.0
  18. Glib 2.0

The events are presented in a realistic fashion, but the idea that something like this could go on so openly without being discovered by federal authorities and being taken down is fairly absurd.

  19. Circumstantial Glib 2.0
  20. Biological Glib 2.0
  21. Physical Glib 2.0
