Good 9 Points 1970

At the time of its release, a sequel to the sci-fi classic Planet of the Apes seemed simply unnecessary. How does somebody go beyond the film’s post-apocalyptic vision? How does somebody go beyond the shock and awe of the first film? How does somebody go beyond the Planet of the Apes?

Planet …

Planet of the Apes
Great 26 Points 1968

How could you not love this movie? Ok, so it doesnn’t blow anyone away with acting, production, etc. But the story-line itself, coupled with Heston’s campy drama makes this an all time family pleaser.

WALL·E
Good 29 Points 2008

Cute Pixar movie. You definitely found yourself identifying with the Wall-E as a human like character, and the adventure with the female bot Eve on a quest to return humans to the planet was a fairly engaging story. Amazing animation and decent action, but my daughter and I found ourselves bored…

Really Great 83 Points 2014

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a superior successor to 2011’s Great Ape Movie, the terrific Planet of the Apes reboot. An upgraded human cast rectifies the origin movie’s one significant flaw, while the ape acting – previously Bogart quality – has become downright Brando-esque. *#DawnOfA…

Mad Max: Fury Road
Great 83 Points 2015

George Miller reboots Mad Max for a new generation with Fury Road. Tom Hardy ably replaces Mel Gibson, while Charlize Theron shepherds five wives through hell, adding a woman’s touch to what remains an absurdly masculine movie. The result is an exhilarating – albeit ridiculous – entertainment…

Children Of Men
Really Great 83 Points 2006

A compelling concept, exceedingly well produced, makes for a grimly terrific movie. Dystopian fantasies like this – What if people could no longer procreate? – provide a rich canvas for filmmakers to project their political predilections, here of a class struggle triggered by the procreation cri…

This Is the End
Great 83 Points 2013

This Is The End is the demented love child of Superbad, Pineapple Express, Cloverfield and Left Behind. Yes, that’s four parents. Who’s judging. Slyly self-referential, super sick and sock-it-to-me funny, it simply slays – comedically speaking. Roughly 40% LOL, the intervening 60% gets …

Contagion
Good 83 Points 2011

This movie is sick, literally. That’s not a bad thing as star-studded disaster movies go, though this one is more paranoiac than most. Fantasizing about the Mother of All Communicable Diseases does make it more than a little fascinating. Is that sick to say?

The star-studded cast proves its …
