Topic: Reality Factor / Tough to rate!

In the case of “Forrest Gump”:http://www.viewguide.com/movies/89437-forrest-…, I just went back and upped the overall Reality factor I’d assigned to 2.3 – Surreal. Got there by judging the CircoReality as 3.0 (Surreal), based on Forrest appearing in all those historical events as you note. Judged the BioReality as 3.0 (Surreal) based on Forrest’s miraculous recovery from cripple to champion runner. I don’t recall any PhysioReality liberties, so left that at 1.0. The average of 3.0, 3.0 and 1.0 is 2.3 (Surreal), which comes in a bit below the overall 3.0 Surreal you assigned.

Topic: Reality Factor / Tough to rate!

I think I’ll get this topic started.

I have found that with many movies, the line between what can be considered realistic and not can become very fine…

Two examples that I think best exemplify this are “Forrest Gump” and “Donnie Darko,” which both happen to be all-time favorites of mine… :)

In the case of Forrest Gump, all the events that take place in the movie are actual historical events, with the character of Forrest Gump being written into those events, as if he had been there. The movie even has actual television and radio broadcasts from the 70s and 80s, with Forrest being transposed into them. Very clever, indeed! How then, however, would you rate such a film in terms of reality? Quite puzzling, if I do say so myself.

With Donnie Darko, the story is fiction, in essence, in that the story is made up, and not based off of actual events. However, the entire concept of the movie is based off of scientific theory regarding alternate universes and time travel. Science suggests that, pending the correct conditions, that such a situation COULD occur… Once again, it seems as though the line between what’s realistic and what’s not becomes muddled.

Thoughts? Any other examples anyone can think of?

Just added “a comparison table”:http://www.viewguide.com/page/OnDemand focused on Netflix, iTunes, Amazon and YouTube.

Interesting how they differ in terms of subscriptions vs. a la carte, downloading vs. streaming, and device accessibility.

Topic: ViewLists / VuList tips

ViewLists are member created lists of movies and TV shows.

  • Favorites: Every member automatically gets a Favorites ViewList. If you tagged some Favorite movies or shows prior to ViewLists coming into being, they’re now loaded into your Favorites ViewList.
  • Creating a List: Click the + ViewList menu from a specific Movie or Review page and select Create new list.
  • Browsing Your Lists: You’ll see all of the ViewLists you created in the drop-down list on the top right of your Member Profile page. Select a list to see the first two movies or shows in it, along with your written and video intro. Click the More button at the bottom to see the full list.
  • Private and Published: Private lists are useful for keeping track of movies you want to view or shows you need to review. Simply click Save to keep a ViewList private. Click Publish to make the list visible to everybody.
  • To Rank or Not: You can have the movies/shows in a list ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd or not. Either way, you set the order in which they appear in your list.
  • Reviews: If you reviewed a movie or show, your review will appear next to it in your lists. If you didn’t and others did, the review of the most trusted reviewer will appear next to it.
  • Faving a List: Click the star atop a list to Fave it. It will then show up amongst your Faved lists at the bottom of your Member Profile page. Your Trust Points will also be added to its Fave total. Lists that you create automatically count you as having Faved them.
  • Quality of a List: This reflects the average Trust Weighted Summary of the its movies/shows.
