  1. Quality
  2. Great 4.0

Literally from the opening frames, was enamored by how funny i found this film to be. “I love you, man” is easily one of the funniest movies of 2009 so far, and a glaring example of comedy done right. A lot of comedies trying to be funny only pull it off about half of the time may want to give this a look so they can see that a good, strong character driven story can be raucous, outrageous, hilarious, and touching (albeit mildly) all at the same time. Don’t let the “r” rating fool you, this film has a lot of heart and has a pretty interesting story behind it as well. And you will laugh…a lot. The actors are bringing their “A” game to a film that overflows with absurdity but will not leave you without a smile on your face by the time the film is over. I highly recommend it as a film to either watch with a date or with a group of friends, male or female.

  3. Perfect 5.0

Paul Rudd and Jason Segel are destined to continue working together after the performances put forth on “I Love You, Man”. Paul Rudd plays the quirky, quippy everyman almost effortlessly at this point but with each time you see him play the character, you find yourself enjoying him as an actor even more. Jason Segel may be the standout as Sydney Fife, the man who inevitably becomes the best friend in the movie. an off-kilter, somewhat madcap character that somehow stays perfectly rooted in reality is the perfect foil for Rudd’s stiffened character of Pete. And we can’t forget Rashida Jones, doing a fantastic job in an otherwise thankless role of Rudd’s fiance, bringing her won sensibilities and warmth to a character that is technically to be background. All in all, a wonderful job by all in this film, from the roles mentioned above to the background characters (J.K. Simmons as Rudd’s Dad, Andy Samburg hilariously playing Rudd’s gay brother, Robbie) to the smallest cameos (Thomas Lennon, hilarious in his small role).

  4. Male Stars Perfect 5.0
  5. Female Stars Perfect 5.0
  6. Female Costars Perfect 5.0
  7. Male Costars Perfect 5.0
  8. Great 4.0

Comedies typically get the short end when it comes to directorial prowess, and the name John Hamburg may not exactly ring a bell initially (he wrote and directed “along came polly” in 2004, by the way), but he handles the execution of the film fairly well, making striking the perfect comical tones as well as creating a believable world (harder than you’d think). It does help to have a striking comic team in the stars to work with, assisting in creating a general easy to watch and well flowing film. The production levels are terrific, the lighting and sound is well suited, and Rush songs playing throughout are a source of appropriateness that may not sound right at first, but is totally perfect. Hamburg also wrote the film, which helps everything be as cohesive as it is. well intentioned and well made.

  9. Direction Great 4.0
  10. Play Great 4.0
  11. Music Great 4.0
  12. Visuals Great 4.0
  13. Content
  14. Risqué 2.2

There is a lot of dialogue in this film that would be considered edgy. The "f"bomb is dropped a considerable amount of times and there are certain themes that may not be for young ones. Except for a glowing recommendation from most reviewers, this film is just like a lot of “r” rated comedy—it has some sexual innuendo and some implication with some very frank speaking about it. The violence is mostly limited to a funny scuffle with Lou Ferrigno. The only thing worth worrying about is the rude and profane humor scattered throughout the film. Nothing too outrageous as to offend, but enough to shock some of the more conservative viewers.

  15. Sex Titillating 2.1
  16. Violence Gentle 1.5
  17. Rudeness Profane 3.0
  18. Glib 1.2

this movie could and likely has actually happened. with the exception of location and some of the characters (lou ferrigno being one that makes it a little more surreal), this is a movie featuring real characters in real situations, and sometimes getting into or out of predicaments hilariously and with a bit of a surreal way. But there will rarely if ever be a moment in this movie that makes you say “no way!”.

  19. Circumstantial Glib 1.2
  20. Biological Glib 1.2
  21. Physical Glib 1.2
