“Disappointing” summer blockbusters should all be this good. It nails the target – if not the bull’s-eye – of what they’re supposed to deliver: bravura moviestar performances, spectacular visuals, manly swordplay, and a touch of romance. At almost two and a half hours, this latest incarnation o…

This surprisingly effective revenge thriller plays better than its formulaic trailer might suggest. The mix of A-List star, well written script and competent direction injects plenty of life into an implausible set-up and the resulting cat-and-mouse games.

Marvel follows its lead-off ‘08 home run (Iron Man) with a stand-up double. Hulk wasn’t one of my favorite Marvel characters, yet this movie is plenty entertaining, with several marvelous scenes, a few laughs and plenty of fanboy thrills.

I Am Legend is a darn good zombie movie, though I admit, zombie flicks aren’t my faves. Will Smith’s tremendous charisma carries the picture, a good thing since he’s the only person on screen for much of it.

Brilliantly conceived and executed, albeit ultimately annoying, this alien allegory of apartheid is a must see for sci-fi, action, and sociology buffs. Any movie “Presented by Peter Jackson” deserves to be seen, this one exceeding the usual sword and sorcerer shtick due to its clever play on the…

Finis. Boffo blow out to the Die Hard series. Willis – he of the movie star blockhead and sotto voce movie star voice – has perfected the art of downplaying his lines in contrast to the over-the-top outrageousness of the action going on around him. The result is one fun, fun, fun big screen en… |

State-of-the-art big screen adventure, not perfect or even great, but culturally significant and plenty of fun. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull starts off beautifully, naturalistically, drawing you in for the surrealism to come, then sustaining this state of grace until ro… |

What we have here is a Great Ape movie, perhaps the greatest ape movie. What’s to challenge it? Or them? More than just superapes, these are simian Humphrey Bogarts. The FX wizards having bestowed them with facial tics, they squint and grimace like great moviestars of yore. In service to a…

Semi-funny satire of action movies and sleepy English villages. Cliches of each are the coin of this realm: think stumbling drunkards at the village pub combined with heavy weaponry and large explosions. Absurdist in tone, though not completely to the level of Monty Python absurd, the movie’s l…

The Boondock Saints traffics in cliches, smoothly and high mindedly at first, then over-the-top, ultimately jumping the shark entirely. Fortunately it’s a hell of a lot of fun the whole way down. It tells the tall tale of twin brothers who rise from the Irish precincts of South Boston to kn…
