1st Halloween
1978 Really Great 32 Points

A classic that remains as powerful and amazing as it was nearly 30 years ago. This low budget masterpiece is what horror was originally all about, and spawned generations of imitations, a remake and 7 sequels that never lived up to the same level. This film has developed a cult following and to this day Michael Myers remains of the scariest film characters of all time.

Set in the fictional town of Haddonfield, Illinois, the story begins as 6-year-old Michael Myers inexplicably stabs his sister to death on Halloween night and is institutionalized. Fifteen years later, he comes home…

1st Pirates of the C...
2003 Perfect 9 Points

A movie based on a ride should never be this good. The jokes shouldn't work this well. Depp shouldn't have been able to put forth such a solid performance. But it all worked. Every last bit of this movie just…worked. The key, I think, is that it never takes itself too seriously. This movie is fun. Yeah, there is action and love and yadda yadda, but its a fun movie and everyone in it is having a good time. That is where this movie succeeds and the other two fall flat.

1st Pirates of the C...
2006 Great 28 Points

Absolutely fantastic second installment in an absolutely fantastic trilogy filled with phenomenal writing, action, directing, acting, music, editing, creativity, and a HUMUNGO enjoyment factor. There's just something about DEAD MAN'S CHEST that just clicks: they seem to have everything right. It's like they took the ingredients on how to make a entertaining and intelligent film and amped it up to a higher degree of funness. Some may say DMC is bloated, could use a bit more editing, and "too complicated" (seriously, guys?), but to me, DMC hit all the right buttons.

1st Knocked Up
2007 Great 50 Points

Seth Rogan "Ben" and Katherine Heigl "Alison" have a drunken fling that winds up getting her pregnant. Only thing is, she's the belle of the ball and he's the unemployed stoner type. The film provides lots of laughs and touching moments as well all made possible by a very versatile and genuinely funny cast. All in all a very enjoyable and smart comedy that stays consistent even through the serious parts.

1st Superbad
2007 Really Great 108 Points

Superbad is still super funny, super filthy and super telling. That last is somewhat inadvertent, but the movie is more than just a lens into the fetid minds of unsupervised boys. The porn-powered self-absorption it observes among millennials dates it as Origin of the Snowflakes. "Just how I feel" justifies everything.

Sociological observations aside, Superbad is a hall-of-fame high school movie that slays comedically. Plus it launched several notable careers, including Jonah Hill's, even as it kicked Seth Rogen's into overdrive.

Brilliant from the opening credits, where white …

1st Hot Fuzz
2007 Good 108 Points

Semi-funny satire of action movies and sleepy English villages. Cliches of each are the coin of this realm: think stumbling drunkards at the village pub combined with heavy weaponry and large explosions. Absurdist in tone, though not completely to the level of Monty Python absurd, the movie's limited success depends on a well modulated performance by the great comedic actor Simon Pegg.

I realize I'm odd man out in my assessment, since several of my trusted WikPik reviewers gave Hot Fuzz Greats and Perfects. It just didn't work for me, especially at an interminable two hours in length.

1st Harry Potter and...
2007 Really Great 32 Points

Just by a slight, slight margin, PRISONER OF AZKABAN is still the best POTTER movie (damn you Alfonso for being such a terrific director!), but ORDER OF THE PHOENIX is mere points away from beating it. Yes, indeed: ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, the fifth installment of the seven-part POTTER franchise is another awesome adventure. A wonderfully crafted screenplay, excellent performances from every actor on board, bloody terrific score, tightly edited, and overall just perfect.

1st Pirates of the C...
2007 Good 16 Points

Not terrible, but a disappointing end to the trilogy that started with so much potential. Like many trilogies, the POTC story grew too convoluted as the movies moved along, and by this third film there's about an hour worth or unnecessary material that does nothing but distract the audience from the heart of the story.

1st Mr. Brooks
2007 Great 17 Points

The role of an upstanding citizen having a dark and evil secret life was a perfect casting for Kevin Costner. The sheer descructiveness of his character is completely hidden to his loved ones. William Hurt makes the perfect alter-ego that only Costner can interact with, and he works well at representing the deepest evil that Mr Brooks wishes to repress. I also really like Demi Moore as the conflicted cop who can barely contain her own aggression. The story is wonderfully put together and has enough surprises to keep the most seasoned of us crime/thriller afficianados on edge.

1st Hairspray
2007 OK 80 Points

High gloss musical fantasy can't escape its lame dialog and unfortunate casting. The song and dance numbers, however, are terrific.
