I don’t think its worth skipping, I’d say rent it on DVD. Hell, maybe see it with the kids in 3D, maybe it’ll make the experience a lot better.

Helpful reviews Iz & MJ. I was intending on seeing Alice in Burtonland, but now feel safe in skipping it. Thanks.

Regarding Wick’s Review
You thought the visuals were bad, Wick? Visually, this film was amazing, IMO. Sure, some of the costumes looked a little cheesy but the CGI on Nite Owl’s ship, the Vietnam war scene, and Dr. Manhattan’s Mars fortress were pretty cool, at least I thought.

OMG Thank you for posting a review, Wick. I’ve been hearing so many mixed reactions and from what I saw on “At the Movies”, it wasn’t lookin too good but now that I’ve seen your review, this is surely gonna be a great one.

Regarding Wick’s Review
Great review, Wick. I love this movie but I’m yet to review it. Black was absolutely fantastic in this movie and I think if it weren’t for him, this movie just wouldn’t have worked so well. And being an aspiring musician myself, I can relate with some of these kids. Also, it made me think “How cool would it be to have Jack Black as a teacher?”

Why doesn’t the Academy have a Best Comedy Oscar? Sure no other genre gets called out, but along with Horror, Comedy gets left out of awards consideration more than any other genre.

Consider the ‘09 Comedies that never had a hope of Oscar recognition: Pirate Radio, Zombieland, Days of Summer, The Hangover, Adventureland, and I Love You, Man. Maybe they didn’t deserve Best Picture noms, though The Hangover has a case, but they sure as hell make a solid slate of six Best Comedy nominees. If I could only nominate five, I’m not sure which one to leave out.

Best Picture assessment

  • Avatar – Biggest movie ever due to formulaic perfection, a beautifully realized cinematic vision, and fashionable America the Ugly politics. I stand by my original assessment: “little more than technical triumph.” Best Picture? Hardly deserving.
  • The Blind Side – Heartwarming, yes. Powerful, absolutely. Best Picture? Nope. (Disclosure: Didn’t see it, but I trust Brian.)
  • District 9 – Escapist politics as well as they’ve ever been done, perhaps. Best Picture? Nominee certainly. Winner. Nope.
  • An Education – Carey? Best Actress nominee, yes. Best Picture? No.
  • The Hurt Locker – Important more for being the first USA friendly Iraq War movie than for being a legitimate Best Picture. Hell, as great as The Hurt Locker is, and it is Great, let’s hope that once the dust has settled, it’s not even the greatest Iraq War movie.
  • Inglorious Basterds – A Perfect movie. That ain’t chopped liver, especially from major auteur Tarantino working with Big Brad Pitt. Still, its National Lampoon sensibilities render it less than Best Picture worthy.
  • Precious – Didn’t see it, though it’s almost certainly not in the running for the statuette.
  • A Serious Man – Great, but misses Best Picturehood by crossing the ludicrous line. Lucky that the BP nominee list doubled to ten this year.
  • UP – Yes. Justice would be served if UP won Best Picture. Movies get no better. Still, whatever the outcome, it’s not the Best Picture this year.
  • Up In The Air – Great American Movies are even more rare than Great American Novels. Capturing the zeitgeist when it’s full of angst, while still delivering a zinger of a sex comedy: that’s Best Picture stuff. Whether it wins or not, Up In The Air was the best picture of an angst filled ’09.

Regarding Wick’s Review
I published this last night, prior to Tiger’s club house statement.

Our aloof über celebrity’s got a long way to go but took a big step this morning.

Leo did most of his carousing prior to marriage, giving Sonya his wild oats diary prior to their marriage. The cad.

So Tolstoy paced Woods in arrogance, if not in score.

True. Good review, izzio. I guess this won’t be up there with some of Mr. Jackson’s best like LOTR or King Kong.

Great review, izzio.

I’m glad to see me and Wick aren’t the only people who think Guy Pearce is an underrated and underused actor.
